Publicity from my Home-ies

Lincoln Properties, the manager of some apartments in Fort Worth, has blogs with information about Fort Worth - presumably for its residents.  And they gave a little shout-out to yours truly.  I'm not just telling you this to brag.  They also have other relevant information about Fort Worth.  And did you catch my play on words - Home-ies, because people call their apartment their home?  Get it?  But I guess that would also work for food carts that sprout up near people that live on the street.

This is the blog from Lincoln Trinity Bluff in Northeast Downtown - Trinity Bluff

And this is the blog for The Berkeley which is off Park Hill - The Berkeley

Thanks to both for the mention.

Food Truck Park Update

And don't forget about August 3rd.  It's on your calendar right?  The City's Board of Adjustment will consider a request for a special exception for the Food Truck Park mentioned here a month ago.  It was tabled last meeting after some confusion regarding the request.  The applicant, Chris, is asking for a special exception to the mobile vending ordinance which would allow up to 8 food truck/trailers to vend out of the lot.  Keep us updated Chris.

Junsuree Thai No More

As rumored in the comments section last week, Junsuree will soon become a Mexican restaurant.  The location formerly/currently held as Junsuree Thai will soon become Mijo's Mexican restaurant.

Thanks to loyal reader Ash for notifying the oft-distracted crew here of the news which DFW.com is also confirming.

If you'll recall, Junsuree recently came under new ownership with rumors floated that if the Thai idea didn't work, the restuarant would switch to mexican food.  According to Ash and others, Mijo's is a good place with daily specials.  But it's a shame to lose the variety on Magnolia and here in town.  FWHITW is a big fan of panang curry but can barely keep up with all the mexican places.

I imagine they will shut down to remodel (if they haven't done so already) but we'll keep you updated as news come in.  Thanks to Ash and our Anonymous commentator who provided the information.

laa korn Junsuree Thai.  A tattoo artist swears that how you say good-bye.  Just to be safe, I'm having it inked to my calf.

The Cup

The Cup, the new Italian inspired coffee shop on Camp Bowie, has officially opened.  They've now been open for about a week and are working to spread the word.  A trusted reporter who refuses to let me call him friend stopped by this morning.  He says the drinks are good, the service is great and he hopes it hangs around.

I haven't been yet but I'll stop by soon to give you a full, detail-less report.  Until then, check it out and let me know what you think.  From what the FWHITW reporter says, The Cup would also like to remind you that they serve breakfast and lunch.  And for those of you with dogs, the patio is dog friendly.  The latte, not so much.

Right now they're open from 7 am - 2 pm but they expect to stay open later starting sometime soon.

The Cup is located at 3909 Camp Bowie.  This is the old Blue Bonnet Bakery location.

Shaw's Burgers & Shakes

For those of you that loved Scampi's, this review will mean very little to you.

The former location of Scampi's is now Shaw's Burgers and Shakes, a burger joint with a broad menu that seems to deliver on all accounts.  Ann Shaw, daughter of the Scampi's chef finally kicked her dad out of the business (not true) and created an intimate, yet very casual restaurant the size of a small bathroom.  At roughly double the size of Nonna Tata, Shaw's is not a large place, but tables seem to fill and empty quickly as people throw their food down their throat in an effort to enjoy it as quickly as possible.

A recent late lunch put me and the lady FWHITW at Shaw's right before 1 pm and the place had a short line of people waiting for a table.  We were seated within minutes and had food a few minutes after that.  Ann was hustling around the restaurant as part-time Hostess, Waitress, Seater, Arranger, Busgal, and Server.  She did it all which definitely seemed to help the actual wait staff.

The menu has enough different items for all crowds.  There is a huge selection of burgers with toppings ranging from a variety of cheeses to andouille sausage.  They even have a crab burger and a lamb burger.  But for the healthy eatin' folks (hippies), they have salads, sandwiches, soups, and milk shakes.  It is important to remember that the size of this place will cause people to judge you if you order the lamb crab burger with cheddar, extra bacon and chili.  The size of this place alone will make many of you reconsider and order the soup and salad combo.  You also have the option of ordering a draft Abita Root Beer.  Order it at lunch if you have friends/coworkers at another table.  The rumors of your alcoholism will be hilarious.

Our meal consisted of the special of the day - chicken tender plate with steamed veggies and fries - and the grilled cheese with bleu cheese, bacon and tomato.  And sweet potato fries.  The chicken tenders were great, although when are they not?  They were plump, made with actual chicken tenders, instead of the pink puree you may find at certain places.  And the sides were good as well.  A steamed veggie side can only be so good, but it makes you feel better about eating all the fried goodness on the remainder of the plate.  This meal also came with a flavored ketchup, the I can't remember the flavor.  Tomato and something.  It was good.

The bleu cheese grilled cheese cheese sandwich with cheese, came on crispy toast with lots of bacon and tomato, though it lacked the bleu cheese flavor.  It may have been in there because the sandwich was gooey, but the taste didn't come through.  This wasn't a big problem though, because I was drunk on my third glass of draft root beer.

Though I haven't had the burger, two trusted field reporters have confirmed that the burgers are delicious.  They even went so far as to say they'd let me take them back and buy them another for further review.

For you long time readers, you know of my tendency to spy on others and stare at the food of nearby tables.  All the food looked good, but I heard one complaint.  A table nearby mentioned something about this not being a family friendly place.  I don't have a family that claims me, so my opinion may be off a little.  But they were obviously drunk on root beer.  Shaw's looks like a place I would have loved to go to as a child.  They have booths and root beer on draft.  They have burgers, sandwiches, and milk shakes.  If this isn't family friendly, then my kids will be screwed when it comes time for me to entertain them.

If you haven't been, give Shaw's a shot.  You'll see Ann running around so say hi and she'll make you feel at home.  And let me know what you get because I think this place will get worked into my regular rotation and I want to only try the best stuff there.

Shaw's is located at 1057 West Magnolia Avenue.  They're open Monday through Sunday for lunch, and dinner on Wednesday through Saturday.

Edit to add:  I forgot one of the most important components of Shaw's.  It's BYOB, which is always a plus in the restaurant world of overvalued drinks.  But its also BYOT.  That's right, bring your own Tequila, and for $2.99, they'll provide the rest of the ingredients to make you a margarita.

Food Truck Park?

What would happen if a trailer park and the Yum Yum truck hooked up and had a secret child nobody knew about?  Then that child went to school at some small liberal arts school in Portland or a lesser state school in Austin?  Then what would happen if it moved back to Fort Worth?

Welp, the Star-Telegram is reporting that the City's Board of Adjustment will be asked to grant a special exception to the mobile vending ordinance to create a Food Truck Park.  The lot is west of downtown, on Weisenberger and I think just east of Carroll (behind the Target).

As you've no doubt noticed, food trucks are popping up everywhere and they're re-energizing the mobile food industry long considered the purveyor of dirty food at carnivals and construction sites.  The trend of food parks is also expanding to provide a central focus point for truck food.  San Antonio has one, dallas is considering one and now we may have our own here in the Fort.  And of course, Austin, Portland, etc have them.

If you're interested, the Board of Adjustment meeting is June 6th and Chris' request is 15th on the agenda, so don't worry about getting there on time.  Also, there is some opposition from nearby companies who are worried about the traffic impact on the streets around their operations.  Chris is seeking a special exception which would allow up to 8 food trucks (or trailers) on the property.  Presumably it will not be eight taco trucks....  Chris, the masses have spoken on the need for different foods.

For those of you in favor of food trucks, this is probably a good sign.  If you're against them, you hate capitalism and Joseph McCarthy's son wants to add you to a list he's compiling.

Let the world know what you think by commenting.  Remember, the leaders of the Fort have this blog as their home page.
