La Playa

Note:  Since this review was published, La Playa burned down.

How about a two dollar margarita on a patio? What? Its too hot outside to enjoy a patio during the summer in Texas? Go back to Pittsburgh, yuppie.

What if I told you that there was a patio that has addressed your heat related concerns? There is. Here's the rundown of "cool" ideas:
  1. its covered to keep the sun out
  2. fans to keep the air moving
  3. wire mesh furniture to keep your obesity cool
  4. margaritas
  5. for two dollars
  6. waitresses that don't speak english
  7. more margaritas
I think thats all you need to know, but as usual, I'll ramble on until I get tired.
Two weeks ago, my wife and I joined some friends at La Playa, which is in the La Playa Maya familia. La Playa has a seafood theme with fish and shrimp entrees. The ceviche is beloved by our friends and the shrimp quesadilla was a big hit all around. I also had the tacos with carne asada and they were terrific with a side of cilantro and onions.
In case you were wondering, the chips and salsa are delicious. It may be the same stuff they have at the La Playa Maya down the street. Its great, especially while sitting out on the patio, drinking a margarita or beer.
Happy hour runs from sometime until seven. I'm not really concerned about the starting time, because unlike some of you, I can't sit around and drink all day. So the end time is where I get concerned. The margaritas, though not the best in town, are cold and satisfying with a bowl of chips, some guacamole and good mexican food.
Oh, did I mention the waitresses speak very little English? this makes it a great place to practice your spanish. And, this month they are celebrating their 20th birthday. So its a great time for a fiesta (thats spanish for a pinata).
To get to La Playa, go up Main out of downtown, just past North Side Drive and make a left on Central. The building will be on your right a short ways down. It's got a sign. The sign says "La Playa". Thats spanish for "the Playa". So, you know its authentic.
Check out the La Playa Maya link to the side and it will take you to their page. If you're suspicious of the coolness of the patio, you probably aren't a happy person and need to change your outlook on life. Remember, the margarita glass is half full at La Playa.

the girls at my office have a standing order on Fridays for lunch at La Playa on the westside off Camp Bowie. they are addicted to the nachos.

There you go guys - nacho laden ladies are awaiting your presence at the Camp Bowie La Playa.

I didn't have the nachos at the La Playa I went to, but they looked good from what I could tell by staring at others' plates.

Which location did you visit? I don't know which ones have patios...also, were the $2 margaritas on a happy hour deal? If so, what times?

This visit was to the La Playa on the North Side, on Central (not La Playa Maya on Main which is across from El Asadero). The two dollar margaritas are the happy hour price and I know HH ends at seven. I don't know what time it begins. But probably before work ends. Order an extra couple at seven (they're a bit weak) so you'll be covered for an hour or so after HH ends.

That is my favorite La Playa. The seafood is much better there.

Just saw on channel 5 that La Playa on Central burned last night/this morning. Looked pretty bad.

NP. It is funny- When my husband and I try somewhere new we always remark "must send info to Hole in the Wall". Keep up the good work.
