La Familia

OK, I've been going to La Familia for years now. My dad and I used to go when they were in their old location on 7th. Anybody who has been in FW for a short amount of time has probably heard of the restaurant. The family that owns/runs it is a genuinely nice group of people and they take a lot of pride in their restaurant (I also used to be a teller at the bank they used so I got to see them a lot). I remember Mr. Cavazos (owner/manager/chief hand shaker) used to make us feel like we were his favorite customers even though I'm sure he made everybody feel that way.

But anyways, the food. When it comes to basic tex-mex there are two things I really like, beef enchiladas with the house sauce, and beef fajita burritos. When I can find it, that's my breakfast of choice (future eating-to-obesity champion). But hey, I'm skinny now so why worry about that stuff...

I cannot think of the last time I haven't left La Familia without a beef fajita burrito with guacamole and pico de gallo. The guacamole always taste so fresh and zesty, the pico has a great spice to it (without spice, isn't it just a tomato salad?) and the beef has a tremendous flavor and is always juicy. I haven't had their enchiladas in awhile but I've always thought they fill the tex-mex craving requirement. Sometimes when I'm in the mood for tex-mex I don't want some fancy enchilada with numerous cheeses and unique ingredients. I want a tortilla, wrapped around ground beef, covered in a basic sauce. This place does it right. But you can also get some fancier enchiladas here as well.

Of course, I must mention that La Familia is not just your basic tex-mex restaurant. They also have a number of dishes that can satisfy your baja-mexican fix. For instance, I have pledged to try the fish tacos next time I stop in. If you happen to stop by before I post about it, let me know what you think.

La Familia is now located at 841 Foch. If you haven't been in awhile, be warned that they've moved to this new address.

ever since the move, la familia is shit.

carnival, cartoonish atmosphere and insincere muchachos shaking hands and lighting sugar cubes on fire.

the food, once fresh and great, is now lukewarm and merely okay.

i will never go to la familia again.

Okay. Not feelin' the La Familia love from Anonymous, I guess.

I went to La Familia about a year ago with Kevin/Fort Worthology and the food was quite tasty (and this was after the move. Never went before the move). I had the veggie tacos--their guacamole was so fresh, and I loved their bean soup. The chips and queso were yummy too. We've been meaning to go back, we've just never gotten around to it. Maybe we'll go this weekend.

I'm interested to know what you had when you went, anonymous...or if you work for a La Familia competitor. Is there another place you would recommend?

I have been there since they moved and I thought the place was great. I will say that it was better in the old place, but for me it was probably just the atmosphere that made it better. The decor at the new place reminds me of most small town mexican joints I've eaten at.

Stephanie, I have been craving their bean soup since I made the post. I'll have to give the veggie tacos a shot next time too. But maybe I'll review Spiral diner as my first veggie-post-foray.

Hi,
I just found your blog via FortWorthology and, as someone who just moved to FW (as of this very week, in fact), I appreciate what you're doing here. One of the things I love about FW is the surplus of local restaurants to try!

If you review restaurants that have menus online, will you provide the link?

I'll tell you where I've eaten so far: Lili's Bistro (lunch) and loved it; Spiral Diner (seriously, a large part of why I moved to FW over Dallas); and Nonna Tata (dinner) what a fabulous place! - all on Magnolia.

Can't wait to try out more of these places. Especially since Stephanie has revealed that La Familia has at least one vegetarian option! (Thanks!!)

Sarah,

I read your post after discussing Lili's but I will go back and put in online menus when I review. Thanks for the tip. I also thank you for your kind words.

Fort Worth is very fortunate to have a great selection of local places to eat. The people of FW also seem to recognize this because a number of our restaurants are doing well enough to branch out and open new locations throughout DFW.

My girlfriend and I tried La Familia about 4 times. Initially thought the margaritas were good until we saw they poured directly from a pre-mixed bottle that can be had from any liquore store. Food - Average at best. They say everything's fresh, but that's only good when it's fresh AND ripe. The salsa was always made with unripe tomatoes that had way to much pulp.

Anonymous, on the plus sdie, the margaritas come with a flaming sugar cube.

Terrible...horrible...disrespectful...it should be called"Un Familia"...they put real family own businesses to shame....

Anonymous, La Familia is a real family business. It's just one that has exploded in size due to its popularity. Sorry you had a bad experience. Go in and tell Al what happened and I bet he'll make it up to you.

Thanks for reading.

It's nice to have you FWHITW. Wife and kids love vegetarian enchilada and kids quesadilla. My fish taco was just right. You know it's not a frozen battered fish they sent out. Fresh salsa was refreshing.
