Has anybody ever had one of these? They're popular in certain parts of Mexico and the term literally means "drowned sandwich". I believe you fill a sliced open bolillo roll with shredded pork, and then dunk the entire thing into a pot of spicy tomato sauce or hot sauce. Eating the sandwich is a mess because the entire thing is wet and spicy.
The torta ahogada is generally considered to be a popular hangover food - for those of us who don't care for menudo (spanish for "regurgitated goat guts").
Does anybody know of a place in Fort Worth that sells these? Anybody own a Mexican restaurant and want some free publicity by beginning to sell these?
Thanks for any info.

I have never had one and I traveled quite a bit in the mainland. It sounds good to me, though.
Is this something you think people would really eat?
Try Tunera (20th Street and North Main) for a fantastic Torta. My favorite is the Pastor. Awesome and very afforable.
KimberlyDi,
You're as crazy as Mr. FWHITW! Would you eat Queso on your chicken Fried Steak...He does!
Anonymous - actually i'm old school with cream gravy on my CFS. When you consider that it's made of lard, flour & milk instead of cheese products only (queso), I'm questioning which is the crazy choice. :)
Francis, its been a long time since I've had one but all I remember is deliciousness. And messiness.
Anonymous 1 - KimberlyDi and I would eat them. And I think other people would eat them on account of the immense publicity this site would provide.
Raquel, I'll give them a shot. I'm always up for a good torta. Do you know if they'll dunk the torta in a spicy tomato sauce for me?
Anonymous 2 - the green of your envy is not a pretty color on you. Explain in two letters or less why queso on chicken fried steak is not the perfect marriage? Thats what I though.
KimberlyDi, have you had a torta ahogada before? If so, which part of Mexico were you in? Also, a CFS covered in queso fundido would work to avoid cheese products.
Thanks for reading.
KimberlyDi and Mr. FWHITW,
There is only one (or 2) word that describes you're warped taste! DQ
I started to snark on Anonymous, but I think his limited choices in seeking out yummy grub snarks on him daily.
I'd definitely eat it. It sounds beautiful.
i too have been looking for tortas ahogadas, I am sure nothing will come close in texas but if anyone finds them i'd definitely be interested!!
I have had MANY tortas ahogadas in Guadalajara Mexico! The closest thing to the authentic is in Gran Plaza, a Restaurant called Jalisco. Great Flavor. Dont forget to ask for extra Onions... and the HOT Suace. Now, you will not get the Birote bread, only made in Mexico, but the flavor is defenetly there! JL.
Totilandia on West Berry has them.
Very good.
Tortilandia on West Berry. Very good Torta Ahogada.
There is a place in North Dallas I frequent called La Hechizera that sells these. They are quite the odd treat, indeed. I believe they are called by a different name at this place, but its definately the same thing you are talking about. Being a Gringo, I have kept these at arms length and usually just go with a regular torta or get really crazy and have a huarche.
Great stuff guys. Thanks for the information.
late to the party, but there is a place on Hemphill near the former Michocana grocery store, it's further souther on the east side of the street. They actually have a sign on the building that says "tortas ahogadas." I have never tried them, but there are a lot of cars in the parking lot...enjoy!
Thanks Anonymous. If anybody has been to this place being mentioned let me know if you've tried one. I'll try to get over there soon.
it's called, Tortas Ahogadas La Perla Tapatia. on 4117 Hemphill beside the auto zone, it's our family owned restraunt. we've been selling these here since september 2010!
I've tried "Platos de Enchiladas" covered with sour cream and queso fresco which come with rice & beans. A different dish I've had there is "Platos de Sopes" include shredded pork with lettuce, sour cream, salsa, a slice of avocado which also comes with rice & beans. Recently, I passed by this restaurant for dinner and had their tacos made with Fajitas that is served with a lemon, rice & beans. My favorite dish would be the enchiladas but the TORTAS AHOGADAS is what they are best known for. This is a family-owned business. Their food is authentic. Also, they are from Jalisco, Guadalajara. I encourage you to go there. If you decide to go, below is the address.
La Perla Tapatia-Tortas Ahogadas
4117 Hemphill St.
Fort Worth, TX 76115
Thanks for the information. I'll make a trip over there soon and report back.
Did you ever make it to La Perla? I don't see your report. I too am looking for Tortas Ahogadas. I used to live in Guadalajara. I was taken to a roadside stand outside of the city and didn't know how to find it again. It made an impression, though. That was 1984! I have seen them offered on a menu @ Guadalajara Grill in Arlington but they never seem to have the Bolillos. I believe they import them because I have never seen a true Bolillo here.
